Hightail Hotshot Exclusive Series: Trailer Brakes Part 1
Heading out with your travel trailer this weekend? Pre-trip like a hot shot operator and test your electric brakes before you need them.
A first and simple test most neglect is to test your breakaway system. The breakaway system is designed to automatically activate the trailer's brakes if it becomes disconnected from the towing vehicle, helping to prevent accidents. To perform this test, you’ll need:
- A fully charged breakaway battery
- A multimeter
- And possibly an assistant to help monitor the brakes during testing.
To test the breakaway system, pull the pin from the breakaway switch, simulating a trailer detachment. This action should immediately engage the trailer's brakes. You can confirm this by attempting to move the trailer slightly (if it’s safe to do so), or by having an assistant listen for the brake engagement sound.
If the trailer rolls easily then your system isn’t functioning. The most likely culprit is the battery that powers the breakaway system. It charges as you drive, but if your trailer has been sitting for a long period it’s probably discharged. Test the voltage and if it’s dead recharge this small battery or replace it.
If the battery reads good but brakes do not engage, check the wiring and the condition of the switch. From here it will depend on your ability, but if in doubt take it to your local trailer repair shop. They can get you on the road in no time.
After testing, remember to:
- Reinsert the breakaway pin
- Reconnect the cable to the towing vehicle
- Verify that the system is reset and ready for normal operation.
Regular testing of the safety breakaway system is essential for maintaining the safety and reliability of your trailer’s braking system.
